Solution for green hands…two bowls of bleach and a scrub brush.
I eat a lot of popcorn….It’s only 70 calories a cup! But I think I eat way too many cups….We have an investigator from Liberia and she says men like their women chunky. That was my excuse for eating half the bag of popcorn.
This week Sister Koyle and I were mowing a non-members lawn. There’s two of us and one mower so one of us will run around and get as much done as they can and then pass it off and rest while the other one mows. It gets the job done a lot quicker.
Anyway, when it wasn’t my turn I was walking around picking up big sticks and throwing them to the side and I found this little fruit! It looked like a lime and they were all over on the ground. I kinda guessed it was a walnut, but had never seen one fresh off the tree. So naturally I start tearing the flesh off of it to get to the nut. Well before you know it my hands are just covered in greenish brownish dye. I figured it would wash off so I just kept digging until I got to the nut. It wasn’t as exciting as I thought it woud be. So I gave it to Sister Koyle and started mowing the lawn.
Within about 45 seconds something flew in my eye and my face turned into Niagara Falls. EVERYTHING was running. And I couldnt rub my eyes because my hands were green! My eyes started to swell and I couldnt see so we hopped in the car and booked it to our dinner appointment.
We found out it was a walnut and the green stuff was DYE. My hands were totally green and we were headed to the temple the next day! (Oh and we got the thing out of my eye) I did not want to go to the temple with green hands so every house we stopped by that night members tried different remedies. Special soap. Lemon juice. Windex. Dish soap. Mechanic’s soap. Ajax. You name it we tried it. Nothing.
Finally we had to go home. My hands were still green. That morning I tried every cleaning liquid in the house and then some. Finally I prayed. I asked for my hands to be clean. Then I went for the bleach.
It took about 20 minutes of scrubbing my hands raw with bleach for the dye to fade. As I scrubbed I thought of an interesting parallel.
In life we make really stupid decision. Whether they be because we were curious, tempted, or just plain idiotic we make them. Those stupid decisions often leave us dirty. We have stains on our hands that no matter what we try we cannot get rid of. Sin pollutes our souls and contaminates our lives.
No unclean thing can enter into the kingdom of God. Jesus Himself said those who did not repent and cleansed through His atoning sacrifice would be damned, that is, unable to progress.
When we are brought before the judgement bar of God it is my earnest prayer that we will want to be clean. When I was contemplating having to enter into The Lords house with green hands I was scared. I did not want to be dirty in the holiest of places. Just how we will not want to still be bearing the shame of our sins when we stand before God.
So we start to scrub. But no matter what you do, until you apply faith and repentance and utilize the gift and power of the Atonement you cannot be clean. I could not remove the dye from my hands until I used the most powerful stuff I had.
The sacrifice and suffering of Jesus Christ is the most important and powerful event in all eternity.
I testify with all my soul that God does not want us to be dirty. He wants us to come to Him with the sins of a mortal life on our hands and submit our will to His. When we do that we will be clean. We will be able to stand with confidence before the judgement bar of God and hear the words, “Well done my good and faithful servant.”
I know, believe, and testify that the Church of Jesus Christ is The Lord’s Kingdom on the earth. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth , and the light. If you desire to know Him read the Book of Mormon.
In the past week I have battled with and confronted the darkest parts of my soul. I have seen how truly weak I am. I have witnessed how truly incapable we are of doing ANYTHING without Jesus Christ.
“The Natural man is an enemy to God and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless He yields to the enticings of The Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a Saint through the atonement of Jesus Christ the Lord, and becometh a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which The Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his Father.” -Mosiah 3:19
This scripture changed my life five years ago, and it has changed my life. I testify that it is true and also that it is possible. I echo the words of the angel Gabriel “With God, nothing shall be impossible.” (Luke 1:37)
I love you all. I love my Savior Jesus Christ. I love The Gospel.
Love, Sister Johnson
P.S. The community did this super cool service where they had thousands of school supplies donated! All day Monday we sorted, counted, organized, and passed out school supplies to those in need. Our church hosted the program and it was super successful! There were over five hundred people that came through the church that day to receive school supplies! I was so blessed to help out!
Rachel and I unpacked a bajillion dry erase markers. I counted over 3 thousand spiral notebooks with other missionaries. And I ate a bagel. #productive
